One Year Later: Val & Jane of the SPCA Gozo

The friendly barking of dogs greeted us when we arrived at the SPCA Animal Centre in Rabat (Victoria) on Gozo Island. As usual Val and Jane were hard at work with their never ending chores, but were happy to take a few minutes break to receive their well deserved copy of ‘Islands of Cats’. Peter, the stray animal officer in Gozo and featured in Islands of Cats together with Val, had been called away for the day. So regular volunteer Jane was happy to pose for him. And as with all the carers, we wished we could do more to help their vital work.

You can read more about Peter, Val and the SPCA Gozo in 'Islands of Cats' on pages 117-119.

The book tells the story of a representative 22 of over 1,000 stray cat carers in Malta and Gozo on 128 pages, illustrated by over 250 colourful photographs - accompanied by cat facts, stories, interviews, and it introduces places of interest on the Islands. 'Islands of Cats' is available in English, Maltese and German, as well as E-Books including Kindle. And most of all, we donate part of the proceeds of each book sold in aid of neutering and spaying of stray and abandoned cats in the Maltese Islands. One Year Later: Jane & Elaine of the Tomasina Cat Sanctuary

The team at the Tomasina Cat Sanctuary in Luqa were busy cleaning when we arrived to present their copy of 'Islands of Cats'. However, Jane, the Sanctuary Manager, and Elaine, a regular volunteer, happily took a break from their chores to accept the book on behalf of the Sanctuary.

'Thank you for including us in this wonderful book', said Jane. 'It makes us feel good when our work is acknowledged.' Which made Gabi and me feel good too!

Elegant Cats Captivated Malta's Smart City on 3-4 Dec 2016

The spectacular, musical and colourful fountain water show was not the only attraction recently in Malta’s Smart City. The Malta Feline Guardians Club (MFGC) put on a wonderful event as well: the 2016 World Cat Show - Malta. The exhibition hall was teeming with superb pedigree cats, and their humans, who had traveled from Switzerland, Italy, Sweden, Germany and Spain, and other corners of Europe to attend the international cat show.

The show’s main sponsor, PetNutrition House, spared no expense to make sure that the event met the high standards an international cat show requires. MFGC President, Kevin Micallef and his dedicated team’s hard work achieved what they had set out to do, to make Malta’s first international cat show a purring success!

Ms Tatjana Cernova
In keeping with international standards the MFGC invited well respected World Cat Federation (WCF) judges, Ms Tatjana Cernova from Latvia together with Ms Elena Fedorenko and Ms Marina Zhuravleva from Russia.

The well experienced judges, with their keen eyes for perfection, had their work cut out for them with the excellent condition of the cats on show. Abyssinians, Bengals, British Shorthairs, Burmese, Exotics, Himalayans, Maine Coons, Persians, Russian Blue, Siamese, Sphynx and even household cats, just to name a selection, were proudly presented beautifully groomed and glossy, a delight for a cat lovers heart.

Among the first prize winners was 'Hocus Pocus de Lyndsay', a charming champion Sphynx, who proudly with her owners, Lyndsay and Eric Rebetez, took her well deserved award to add to the many others back home in Switzerland (Lyndsay Cattery). With Matthias Wismayer of PetNutrition (r).

Another participant, well known in international cat shows, was 'DK GIC Aloa's Wolverine', a magnificent Maine Coon, who in the company of his owner Andrea Mirino, had come over from Italy (PerlaBlu).

All those who took part in the show were happy with the outcome, and look forward to partake in Malta’s next international cat show.

One Year Later: Carmen & Carmen

Alex with Carmen of Pietà (l) and Carmen of Kalkara (r)
We met both Carmens featured in our book 'Islands of Cats' at the C.S.A.F. [Carers for Stray and Abandoned Felines] Sanctuary in Cospicua, as they were busy helping to care for the 250+ stray cats that live there.

We were proud to present these two deserving stray cat carers with their copy of ‘Islands of Cats', and they were as pleased to receive them!

Besides their volunteer work at the CSAF, the two ladies also take care of their own cat colonies. You can read more about these dedicated women in 'Islands of Cats' on pages 17-19 for Carmen in Pietà, and pages 75-77 for Carmen in Kalkara.

Fundraising - A Fine Lunch for Stray Cats

On Sunday the 4th of December 2016, the SASG Stray Animals Support Group in Malta had organised a fund-raising lunch at the Mellieha Holiday Center. Around 100 animal lovers and friends gathered in a section of the holiday center's restaurant overlooking sunny Mellieha Bay, and we enjoyed a wonderful buffet, followed by a tombola with beautiful prizes. Islands of Cats contributed two books to the tombola, one "Islands of Cats" and one "Il-Gżejjer tal-Qtates", the Maltese version. They were picked up quickly.

About the group: "SASG's aim is to provide support and help to organisations and individuals who dedicate their lives to caring for stray animals. The main activities are providing food for abandoned animals, helping with medication and operations, rescuing and providing recovery facilities for injured cats, neutering stray cat colonies (with post operation recovery facilities), rehoming abandoned cats and dogs, and, of course, fundraising to make all these things possible."

SASG's manager Janine is one of the stray cat carers featured in Islands of Cats. She was presented with her personal copy, with her beloved Biscuit by her side, who also found a place in Islands of Cats. He accompanies Janine during all her activities, on her daily round to feed cats in the wider St Paul's Bay and Golden Bay area, to take care of the shelter in St Paul's Bay, and to supervise SASG's charity shops in Qawra and San Ġwann on Malta. All together, 25 volunteers work for SASG, giving their spare time to stray animals.

We hope the fundraising and tombola ticket sale contributed to the financial needs of this organisation. Alexander and I are always touched to see so many people willing to share - often not the richest of this world - and we congratulate Janine and her crew at the SASG for the wonderful work they are doing for the stray cats and dogs on the Island of Malta.

If you would like to help the SASG, follow this link. And if you'd like to see Janine feed a cat colony in the north of Malta, watch this interview with her made by PBS-TVM and aired on Malta's prime TV station's Saturday night news on 11 June 2016 (Maltese language).

ASPCA New York:Two Rooms, 300 Kittens (via NY Times)

photo Christopher Lee for NY Times
23 November 2016 New York Times: "When you’re a kitten, there’s a lot to learn. In a room lined with cages on the Upper East Side of Manhattan one recent afternoon, Imando was getting a lesson in eating solid food.

'Hi, you,' a woman in scrubs said to Imando, who has scraggly black fur and had just turned 4 weeks old. 'You ready?'

Imando’s teacher, Lourdes Bravo, let go of him for a second. He tottered right into his bowl of food.

This kind of thing goes on round the clock at New York City’s only high-volume kitten nursery, run by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

At the nursery, a concrete-floored, bunkerlike space on East 91st Street, A.S.P.C.A. staff members and volunteers tend up to..." read on.
