One Year Later: Cat Worker Antonella in Malta

Malta, in November 2016: One of the foremost task on receiving the newly published hardcover version of our book 'Islands of Cats' was to present each of the featured, steadfast, stray cat carers with a copy.

The smile that Antonella beamed as we handed her the book, told us more than words how much she appreciated our work. As she browsed through the pages, Antonella told us that there was still a dire situation with stray cats, and how she hoped our book would help to bring more attention to the matter.

Aiming at anybody who cares for animals, author Alexander Johnson explains: "There seems to be an affinity between a part of the Maltese population and the Islands’ feline citizens. These individuals who see to the cats’ needs, the importance of which is underrated, are called: carers or feeders. Newsletter #3D: Produktionshilfe gesucht für Foto-Story Buch 'Inseln der Katzen - Maltesische Streuner und ihre stillen Wohltäter'

Wer die Maltesischen Inseln bereist wird alsbald die wohlgenährten und gesunden Streunerkatzen in Parks und Strassen bemerken... Halt, Moment, gut aussehende Strassenkatzen?...  Ja genau. In unserer kleinen Nation im Herzen des Mittelmeers kümmern sich täglich um die 1'000 Privatpersonen um -konservativ geschätzte- 100'000 streunende und ausgesetzte Katzen.

Unser Fotogeschichten-Buch «Islands of Cats» oder «Inseln der Katzen» wird diese Männer und Frauen aus allen Gesellschaftsschichten porträtieren. Ihre unerlässliche Arbeit hält die Katzen bei bester Kondition - durch Füttern in festen Kolonien, Tierarztbesuche und, die wichtigste Aufgabe überhaupt, sie so jung wie möglich sterilisieren zu lassen, was die Zahl der streunenden Katzen in Grenzen hält. Und alle Kosten begleichen die Streunerhelfer und Streunerhelferinnen übrigens aus der eigenen Tasche.

Daher wird ein Teil der Einnahmen aus dem Verkauf eines jeden Buches den Streunerhelfern zugute kommen. Doch vorab suchen wir Produktionsunterstützung, um die Kosten für die Übersetzungen auf Maltesisch und Deutsch zu decken, ebenso wie für den Druck der ersten 1'000 Bücher, um das Ziel der Veröffentlichung von «Inseln der Katzen» im Mai 2016 zu erreichen.

Wer unserem Projekt hilft, hilft auch den Streunerhelfern. Eine Projektübersicht* mitsamt Videoclip befindet sich in unserer laufenden Crowdfunding Kampagne, die am 9. März endet. Hier kann man eine Zusage für einen Betrag zusammen mit den Kreditkartendetails hinterlegen. Belastet wird die Karte erst am 10. März bzw. wenn das Kampagnenziel erreicht wurde. Alternativ sind Beiträge auch gerne per Banktransfer oder PayPal willkommen. Und selbstverständlich wird jeder Beitrag honoriert.

Liebe Freunde

Seit 2015 arbeiten wir an «Islands of Cats» - einem spannenden und sozial relevanten Buchprojekt, das mit vielen Bildern über die eindrückliche Arbeit der bisher wenig beachteten, freiwilligen Fürsorger streunender Katzen in Malta und Gozo berichtet.

Mit seinem deutschsprachigen Titel «Inseln der Katzen» beschäftigt sich dieses Buch mit dem Phänomen der vielen Privatpersonen, die liebevoll Kolonien verwilderter und ausgesetzter Katzen überall auf den Inseln betreuen. Was aus reiner Neugier begann, wurde schnell zu einer Reise in die Subkultur der maltesischen Katzenfürsorger.

Während unserer Recherchen erfuhren wir zum Beispiel, dass ein geschlechtsreifer Kater jedes Jahr Hunderte von Nachkommen zeugen kann und wird. Kastration bzw. Sterilisation sind wichtige Beiträge zum Wohlergehen dieser Katzen, denn die Nachkommenschaft eines einzelnen Katers kann...weiterlesen.
