James Ryder To Host Comedy Fundraiser For Malta’s Stray Cats This September [Lovin Malta]

From Lovin Malta, 20 May 2026: A group of animal lovers in Għajnsielem has launched a fundraiser to help open a mobile cat café aimed at supporting stray animals across Gozo.

The project hopes to visit different villages around the island while donating proceeds towards food and medical care for stray cats and other animals in need.

Maltese Felines on Stamps (by Lovin Malta)

A few days back, the Lovin Malta blog posted about a new cat series of beautiful stamps showing local felines:

MaltaPost has unveiled Cats Series II, a new set of beautifully illustrated postage stamps celebrating Malta’s deep affection for cats — all set against iconic Maltese backdrops.

Each stamp in the collection was individually painted by local artist Andrew Micallef, known for his detailed and atmospheric works that capture the essence of life on the islands.

Selling 'Malta & Gozo - Islands of Cats' out of Switzerland: Amazon is not for small Suppliers

We have just removed the "Islands of Cats" hardcover edition from all Amazon stores. Reasons? Quite simply, as a small seller on Amazon, you earn next to nothing to amortise your costs and time.

  • Amazon fees (Europe): In order to be reasonably competitive, the selling price must be kept low. Our last price for the hardcover edition was €27.99 / £22.99, which is actually too high for the subject of this book. From this, Amazon deducts a hefty sales fee of €6.65 / £5.88 (and VAT €2.16 Germany) and contributes €3 / £4.02 shipping costs. Makes € 22.18 / £21.13 net for us 👍🏻. But ....
  • Postage from Switzerland: The hardcover edition weighs 620 grams. On January 1, 2022, Swiss Post merged the Economy and Priority shipping options for shipments to the EU / Europe, and instead of Fr 10 as before (exchange rate today €9.65 / £8.25), Swiss Post now charges double of that, i.e. Fr 20 (€19.30 / £16.50) = net for us €2.88 / £2.50. Unfortunately, as a small seller, you cannot adjust the postage on Amazon, you can only inform the prospective buyer in the product description. 👎🏼
  • Other costs: The color printing of the book (offset) with its 220+ photographs costs around €3 / £2.60 per copy in Malta in 2016. That alone exceeds the income of €2.88 / £2.50, plus the padded envelope, the labels, the printer ink, the trip to the post office, the customer correspondence and the marketing work are not yet paid for. 👎🏼
  • Alternative: Let Amazon do the work and use 'FBA - Fulfillment by Amazon', where the goods are stored in one of Amazon's large warehouses and are also shipped from there. However, this is of no interest to small suppliers, because monthly fees of up to €36 / £25 are incurred plus shipping the stock to the warehouse. If a certain sales target is not reached, then Amazon will charge extra. To recoup these fees, we would have had to sell at least 13 books per month to start making a profit. 👎🏼
  • Public interest: We have also offered the hardcover edition to various Malta-related organisations free of charge, but animal welfare in the Mediterranean does not seem to be of interest. 👎🏼

For all these reasons, and as only a costly campaign could still sell the remaining hardcover editions, we decided to give it away free of charge, subject to packaging and shipping costs » LINK.

What is still in storage by autumn 2022 will then be thrown away.

The book is still available, showing a new book cover, as print-on-demand together with the Kindle version in the Amazon stores (with similar low profit - the more colour photos, the higher Amazon's printing costs). The book's topic is timeless, the Maltese Islands are always worth a visit, and cat lovers will enjoy the many insights and photographs.

A Cat's Fate in Switzerland - Amber (via NetAP)

From the Newsletter of NetAP - Network for Animal Protection (Switzerland):

Photograph © NetAP Schweiz

"Amber: one of many and yet unique! Approximately 1.7 million cats live in Switzerland. The number of suffering cats is high. Thousands of cats vegetate on farms, factory sites, in housing estates, market gardens, garden plots and in many other places. Every year, countless young animals are killed because they are unwanted, and those responsible shy away from the costs of neutering or deliberately do without it. At the same time, a real "throwaway mentality" has crept in among the owners. Many are not willing to spend money on their animal. Is it sick or injured, it is disposed of without further ado.

We rescue such cats every day. Cats like Amber.

We found Amber on a farm in central Switzerland. Her skinny little body was covered with wounds. It quickly became evident that this cat would die in agony if it didn't get help immediately. The owner, however, was not willing to have her treated, not even at the expense of a third party. Eventually, and with the help of the police, he had to be persuaded to give Amber up. After several days at the veterinary clinic, Amber gradually recovered from her injuries and massive neglect. She is a little sunshine, very cuddly and incredibly happy that she finally no longer has to suffer from pain and hunger.

Such individual rescues do not change the situation of all cats in Switzerland, of course. Improvement could only be achieved with obligatory neutering and spaying. But every rescue changes the world of the affected animal. And if you also believe that every life counts, then we would be happy to receive your donation for cats like Amber."

Malta & Gozo - Islands of Cats with new Book Cover

To better illustrate the true purpose of 'Malta & Gozo - Islands of Cats', we have created a new book cover for the print-on-demand paperback as well as the Kindle/Ebook edition.

The new cover shows one of our own photographs of Valletta and Upper Barrakka across the Grand Harbour from a position at the end of the pier Xatt Il-Forn at the Vittoriosa Yacht Marina, putting the picturesque watch tower perched on top of Fort St. Angelo's bastion into perspective.

We also posted the cut-out from a shot of a cat colony being fed prominently into the center of the book cover, supported by the book's sub-title 'The Humble Stray Cat Carers of the Maltese Islands'. We hope you like it.

The hardcover edition still comes with Maltese sculptor Matthew Pandolfino's statue in its original look from 2015/2016. If you prefer this colourful, elegant edition, hurry, it will not be reprinted.

'Malta & Gozo - Islands of Cats' not available in Maltese Book Stores anymore !

Agenda Book Store
Republic Street Valletta
And here's why. At the end of 2016, we had signed an agreement with a renowned book publisher and distributor for the Maltese Islands. We aimed to have the book in as many brick-and-mortar book stores on Malta and Gozo as possible; primarily, at the cruise port and the airport, for tourists to acquire a unique and colourful book about an unheralded group of volunteers. The book dwells into the private side of 22 of these individuals, who selflessly and lovingly take care of and strive to limit stray and abandoned cats. In addition, we invested a considerable amount in having beautiful hardcover books printed and delivered, promising €1 per copy to return to the carer community through Happy Paws to support their TNR program.

None of the above exploitation happened. Copies of the books in English, German and Maltese only showed up in a handful of stores across the nation, very few of which were frequented by the Islands‘ visitors. Reporting was late, and soon the distributer insisted that we reduce our stock as it blocked warehouse space.

Announcing Islands of Cats in 2016
Besides our own initiatives, including an interview on popular Animal Diaries and a spot filmed for TVM airing right before the evening news, several attempts to even pay for joint promotion campaigns remained unanswered. In 2020 we donated 120+ stock to the Maltese cat shelters portrayed in our book for them to sell and keep the funds. Due to this turn of adverse events, we were unable to keep our pledge to Happy Paws.

In spring 2021, we finally terminated the distribution agreement. We are still waiting for the distributor’s acknowledgement. And to this date, we have not received any final sales report. In the meantime, the distributor has removed the books from their web store. To say the least, we are disappointed by this company’s unresponsiveness to our promotional efforts.

Our hardcover books can still be ordered in all three languages from the authors directly, or through the European Amazon Stores such as amazon.it, or Gumroad or Lulu.com.

'Malta & Gozo - Islands of Cats' now as paperback

Stray and feral cats are still an issue in the Maltese Islands. That's why we now made 'Islands of Cats' - new title 'Malta & Gozo - Islands of Cats' available as print-on-demand in Amazon Stores, such as the UK, the USA, Canada, European Stores eg. Germany, Australia and Japan

22 representative portraits of the work of over one thousand volunteers are complemented by 232 of Gabriele Bauer's best photographies and entertaining texts, facts and stories written by Alexander Johnson. The authors promise an informative read not only about the dedicated work of the many cat carers but also about locations on the islands Malta and Gozo. An exciting book for animal lovers as well as travellers.

The sales price of the paperback varies per Amazon store and the applicable VAT. Amazon UK lists the book for £ 14.60 including shipment, for example, the US store for US$ 19.99 including shipment. 'Malta & Gozo - Islands of Cats' is also available as ebook for Kindle Fire or the Kindle App (€5.99, £5.15, US$ 9.42).

The more elaborately designed hardcover edition (€29.99, £25.75, European Amazon stores only) will now be securely shipped registered from Switzerland, or order direct through our sales page to save on the hardcover (worldwide shipping). 'Islands of Cats' becomes 'Malta & Gozo - Islands of Cats'

With the pandemic allowing for some more freedom of travel during the months to come, we decided to precede the title of our book by 'Malta & Gozo'. This photo-story book not only talks about the work of the many volunteer cat carers in the Maltese Islands, but also about the country, locations and its history, all topics of interest among the travel community. And after all, the many good looking stray cats are a loved by many tourists as well.

A 'print-on-demand' paperback edition is in preparation and will be available on Amazon soon - in English and German.

The Maltese language is still not supported by Amazon, even though we presented several good reasons to include Maltese, compared to some other languages supported that aim for much less numbers of readers.

For Maltese readers, 'Malta & Gozo - Il-Gżejjer tal-Qtates' is available as hardcover, best to be ordered through our worldwide-delivering web site or as PDF through the platform Gumroad.

In this cat book humans play the main role - Book Review by Valletta - Das Journal

Review of our book (in German) on the popular blog  «Valletta | Das Journal» in September 2018. Thank you, Bertold Schmitt-Feuerbach!

"Almost every photo collection taken by Malta tourists shows at least one cat, often even a whole series. You meet these incredibly photogenic beings almost everywhere in Malta. Almost always they are strays, feral cats. And it is noticeable how healthy and well nourished most of them are, hardly to be distinguished from domestic cats. If one looks closer, one discovers feeding places, plates, water bowls. If you might ask yourself, who takes care of these cats, then the richly illustrated book "Islands of Cats" (German title: Inseln der Katzen) will provide you with new experiences and impressions. So much should be said in advance: This cat book is actually a book about people."

Is Malta really the island of cats? We have proof! by GuideMeMalta

What a nice surprise when a friend in Malta sent us the link to a post about stray and feral cats in Malta, which actually quotes our book 'Islands of Cats' on GuideMeMalta.com. Some time in July 2018,  by Melanie Drury wrote:

"Every visitor will notice the presence of several felines around the Maltese Islands. What about the cats of Malta and why is it becoming known as the island of cats?"

A hungry stray cat colony waiting to be fed on Gozo © 2016 Gabriele Ruttloff-Bauer

"There are many cats in Malta. In the homes, in the streets, in the parks, by the water’s edge, fat cats live happily. In fact, Malta could well be the best place in the world to be a stray.

Locals are so accustomed to their presence that cats have come to play an integral role in the cultural landscape. It’s ordinary to shoo a snoozing cat off the roof off your car and to see cats gathering at the time the cat lady is due to appear with food. Most people tolerate them happily; others leave food and water on their doorstep; and some take it upon themselves to..." read more.

Just a tiny note, the author states that 3,000 feral cats live in the Maltese Islands. A conservative estimation actually comes to 350,000 animals, and that's why neutering and spaying is so important, a topic covered in our book. We financially support the free neutering program of Happy Paws Malta with every book we sell.

Islands of Cats - recommended by The Cat Mag, UK

We are proud of having it made one of six book recommendations in Cats Protection's summer 2018 edition of «The Cat Magazine».

"Since 1931, The Cat magazine has been informing and entertaining cat lovers all over the UK. The Cat is a widely-read publication with the distinction of being part of the UK’s largest feline welfare charity, Cats Protection."

We hope that the recommendation contributes to awareness of the beautiful work of all those stray cat caring volunteers around the world, and the welfare of our feline fellow citizens. Thank you The Cat Magazine.

Owners must neuter free-roaming cats, say animal welfare groups - by SwissInfo.ch

Having whitnessed first hand in Malta how rapidly uncontrolled feral cat colonies can grow, we, the authors Islands of Cats are ardent defenders of TNR - Trap-Neuter-Release. The call for a neuter/spay obligation has become louder recently, with an an estimate of 300'000 feral cats roaming the country. On June 12, Swissinfo.ch wrote online:

Swiss animal protection groups have collected more than 115,000 signatures calling for the obligatory castration of cats that go outside.
Symbolic image - stray cats in Floriana, Malta - © 2016 Gabriele Ruttloff-Bauer
The aim of the non-binding petition is to curb the number of stray cats and reduce unnecessary suffering. The Network for Animal Protection (NetAP) and Tier im Recht (TIR) handed in the petition, backed by more than 150 organisations, to parliament on Tuesday. They estimate that 100,000-300,000 stray cats live in Switzerland. One of the main causes of the stray-cat problem is that owners of free-roaming house cats don’t always neuter them, with the result that these cats mate with strays, producing offspring. ... read more.

Simon's Cats: Off to the Vet

Simon Tofield nailed it again. Cat owners - as well as stray cat carers taking animals from their colonies to have them neutered and spayed - can very much relate to the struggle. Enjoy!
